The application of CPAP in neonatal care is a daily occurrence. Applying continuous positive pressure to the airway of a spontaneously breathing newborn contributes to maintaining the exchange of oxygen and CO₂ and is a strategy to reduce intubations. The EasyFlow CPAP system is well-suited for neonatal care. In this blog, we describe some practical matters.

Preparation
Connecting and preparing the necessary CPAP components as much as possible in advance makes it possible to start CPAP therapy quickly. It is then quite possible to apply the CPAP system, which is already connected to the ventilator, nasally within a short time. Then place the EasyFlow forehead support on the newborn’s forehead. This allows the CPAP system to be fixed directly to the forehead, after which the headband or cap can be applied for further fixation.

Headband
It is practical to use a headband with the CPAP system when caring for newborns. The headband provides the correct positioning and at the same time gives good access to the top of the head if desired. The headband is also easy to adjust in terms of size when the head circumference changes in the period after birth.

Positioning
Once the headband is also connected, the optimal positioning can be applied immediately. By moving the applicator with magnet of the EasyFlow CPAP system on the forehead support, the nasal prongs can be positioned so that they do not come into contact with the area around the nostril.

These practical matters can help with a practical workflow of CPAP in neonatal care.
We also previously wrote a blog about positioning with the EasyFlow CPAP system and a blog about material type and sizing of the EasyFlow CPAP system.
