We are regularly approached with the question: “Do we also need to test our dental equipment for electrical safety?” Below is a description of this question.

Every day, thousands of patients are examined and treated with dental equipment. This equipment is used to make a diagnosis or treat dental conditions. Much of this equipment comes into physical contact with the patient.
To ensure that this equipment is safe and functions properly, there are guidelines that we can adhere to. This concerns safety for the patient, and also, of course, for the user and the environment.
According to IEC60601, dental equipment is considered medical equipment and must be checked accordingly.
IEC60601 is a standard that specifies the requirements that a medical electrical device must meet during production and before commissioning.
Since 2012, there has also been a standard that specifies how equipment that falls within the scope of IEC60601 can be tested periodically and after repair during its lifespan: the IEC62353.
In addition to visual and functional checks, electrical safety is an important part of the periodic check or check after repair.
