Bilirubin measurement in the home setting

Practical implementation

Measuring bilirubin in newborns can now also be done at home with a transcutaneous meter: fast, objective, and less stressful than blood sampling.

It is best to detect a high bilirubin level in newborns as early as possible. Ideally, you should do this in an objective manner. Such an initial objective bilirubin determination can serve directly as a starting point for further follow-up.

Bilirubin measurement currently often takes place in the hospital, but it is now also possible to perform this measurement at home. This allows you to measure reliably early in the process.

What do you need and how do you keep it simple?

The transcutaneous bilirubin meter

Bilirubin measurement at home can be very practical with a hand-held transcutaneous bilirubin meter. This measures the bilirubin level through the skin using infrared spectroscopy. You place the sensor on the ear of the newborn and perform the measurement. The device displays the bilirubin level in µmol/l on the screen.

Because you are on the road with the meter, it is useful that it runs on battery and lasts a long time. Mobile charging is also an advantage. In addition, some meters can store the measured values. The associated software keeps track of measurements per newborn and displays the data clearly in graphs.

Thanks to these functions, the meter is a very handy instrument that can be used anywhere.

Transcutaneous vs. serum bilirubin determination

The transcutaneous measurement is almost as accurate as the measurement via blood (serum). The BiliCare transcutaneous bilirubin meter shows a correlation of 90% with TSB (Total Serum Bilirubin). To bridge any measurement deviation, add 50 µmol/l to the transcutaneously measured value as standard. This ensures that no newborns fall outside the screening.

Moreover, this method is less stressful for the baby.

The transcutaneous bilirubin meter is suitable for all newborns in whom you suspect an elevated bilirubin level or in whom you want to use the value as a starting point. Would you like to know more about bilirubin measurement in the home situation? Please contact us.
